The area that is now the Netherlands has existed for many years, but during the late Middle Ages the area was not called the Netherlands. The first permanent residents date from the Stone Age, from about 9000 BC. Several tribes lived here then. From about 5000 BC the first farmers began to arrive. During the Roman period the first cities were built. The first half of the Middle Ages were known as the Dark Ages but after the year 1000 came a change. There was increased prosperity, the population grew and trade flourished. This trend has continued down to the present, with a number of less affluent periods in between.
This means that various artifacts from a number of different periods can be found in the Netherlands. There are even things that date from the time of Christ. Think of the mounds in Friesland, the Megalithic tombs in Drenthe and the flint mines in Limburg.
The ice ages carried “debris” to different parts of the Netherlands via glaciers. After the ice melted, the debris was left behind. Thus arose the hills in Salland and Hondsrug. Lateral moraines were also caused by the glaciers, and the sliding ice brought the ground up to form the Veluwe and the Utrecht Ridge. Today, this is a beautiful natural area where you can hike and cycle to your hearts content!
The Wadden Islands are a series of islands that stretch along the north coast of the Netherlands and Germany to Denmark. During low tide the Wadden Sea recedes so much that it is almost dry between the islands and the mainland. It is therefore an important feeding area for many birds. If you would like to enjoy a peaceful holiday among nature, then the Frisian Islands are an excellent choice. Bird watchers will also enjoy this area. Here you can go cycling and/or hiking as well as enjoy the sea, dunes and nature reserves. At night you can dine out in one of the cozy villages, enjoy a drink in a pub or stroll along the beach.
The Netherlands is a land by the water. In addition to its long coastline, the Netherlands also has numerous lakes and other wetlands. Here you can sail, surf or go boating. If you would prefer to keep your feet dry, then you can hike or cycle along the water. You can find lakes all over the Netherlands: the Frisian Lakes in Sneek and the Gaasterland; the Weerribben in Overijssel; Giethoorn; the Markermeer; the Ijsselmeer; Waterland and the Loosdrecht Lakes.
In addition to water the Netherlands has many wooded areas. Ideal for cycling or hiking. The largest natural area in the Netherlands is the Veluwe. In this area it is common to see game such as deer and wild boar. Other nature areas include the Utrecht Ridge and the Kempen in North Brabant.
The long coastline of the Netherlands offers the opportunity for a seaside holiday. The beaches are pretty wide and the sea descends gradually. It is ideal for families with children. Besides swimming, paddling and building sandcastles in the summer, the beach is suitable year round for long beach walks. The lively boulevards and shops make a seaside holiday complete.
The Netherlands also has a lot to offer those looking for culture. There are many wonderful cities like Amsterdam, Leiden, Utrecht and Maastricht. Here you can spend time looking around, visiting museums and galleries, or shopping.
The Netherlands is of course known far and wide as the land of the flowers, especially tulips as well as wind mills and clogs. Particularly in the west of the Netherlands, there are many tulip fields you can visit. Wind mills are common in Friesland and in the coastal provinces as they were used to pump water. Be sure to have a look at the windmills of Kinderdijk near Rotterdam. For a nice “picture” of the Netherlands visit the miniature city of Madurodam near The Hague.
