Information

Terschelling, the second largest of the Wadden Islands, is known as an oasis of natural beauty, tradition, and peace. Wind-swept dunes, low bushlands, and long beaches make up the natural landscape of the island. Several picturesque villages dot the region, including West Terschelling and Midsland, with the latter being home to Brandaris, the oldest lighthouse in The Netherlands. In Midsland Noord, fringing Terschelling’s rolling heathlands, lies Skylgerduin, a haven of high-end comfort with spacious apartments made for anyone who wishes to leave their busy lives behind for a while.

Skylgerduin

Skylgerduin is the ultimate getaway for nature, culture, and beach enthusiasts. The brand-new apartments feature modern, yet cozy interiors with high-quality amenities and charming terraces with outdoor furniture. From the comforts of Skylgerduin, the various hiking and cycling routes of Terschelling are a mere stone’s throw away. Each apartment comes with a bike shed and there is a public parking lot right next to the building.

Skylge 2+2p for 4 people

Surroundings

Although Skylgerduin borders the unspoiled natural landscape of Terschelling, the high-end apartments are still close to every holiday necessity imaginable. Right next door, the playground of Camping Hoeve 't Noord is accessible for children staying at Skylgerduin. Here, children can play as long as they want while the parents can keep an eye on them from their own terrace. Those looking to rent a bike with which to explore the island don’t have to look far. Just across from the camping, Tijs Knop rents out both normal and electric bikes. For a delicious and traditional dinner, guests can head over to De Drie Gapen just down the street, and finally, the closest supermarket, along with a wide around of fun little shops and boutiques, can be found just 1 kilometer away in Midland.

The northern and eastern shores of Terschelling are comprised of long beaches with pristine sands. Three of these beaches, West aan Zee, the Midsland, and the Oosterend, are accessible to the general public. Rent a bike or simply walk to one of the beaches via one of several breathtaking dune trails. The beaches are dotted with charming, tasty, and unique restaurants, such as Strand Restaurant West aan Zee, Strandpaviljoen de Branding, Zandzeebar, Formerum aan Zee, Heartbreak Hotel, and Strandpaviljoen Kaap Hoorn.

It won’t come as a surprise that the island of Terschelling is renowned for its exciting water activities. To the northwest, Surfvillage offers surfing lessons, SUP tours, and equipment rentals during the warmer months of May until the Autumn Break in October. You can also try your hand at the most famous of Wadden Islands activities, Wadlopen. During low tide, you can take an excursion onto the seabed and explore the unique natural features that have short-tracked this island onto the Unesco World Heritage list. Take your Wadlopen experience to the next level with one of Flang’s excursions starting in Hoorn, where the guide lets you pick your own oysters to enjoy during a cooking workshop afterward.

For those who wish to keep both feet firmly on the ground, there is enough to see and experience on land too! Strike your way across the 18 holes of the Molenbaan mini golf course or take a horse-and-cart ride across the beach! West-Terschelling is also a highly worthwhile village to visit. Saunter along the little harbor, visit Brandaris (the oldest lighthouse of The Netherlands), and marvel at the old WW2 bunkers that flank the northeastern and western edges of the village.

Furthermore, West-Terschelling houses the nearest VVV. This public tourist office can offer any type of help or advice when it comes to getting the most out of your holiday. They know all the ins and outs of Terschelling and can get you starting on some of the most fascinating hiking/cycling trails.

Finally, the island hosts several unique museums and exhibitions. They are not your run-of-the-mill kind of places, so be prepared to gain some weird new knowledge! For example, you can explore Terschelling’s favorite fruit at the Cranberry Museum or gawk at trinkets, baubles, and treasures fished up from various shipwrecks at the Wrakkenmuseum.

All-in-all, Terschelling offers a wide range of activities for everyone. Whether you wish to cycle through pristine nature, go Wadlopen on the shores, take up surfing, or delve into the culinary delights of the island, your days will be filled with excitement. And once you are done, Skylgerduin will be there to welcome you with a warm shower and soft beds.

To start with, I would like to say that planning a family holiday (with children) is not at all the same as planning a holiday for a couple, or nonetheless for yourself. Read more
